World Breastfeeding Week 1- 7 Aug 2024

Breastfeeding support for all

World Breastfeeding Week is held in the first week of August every year, supported by WHO, UNICEF and many Ministries of Health and civil society partners.

The theme for 2024 is Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all.

The campaign will celebrate breastfeeding mums in all their diversity, throughout their breastfeeding journeys, while showcasing the ways families, societies, communities and health workers can have the back of every breastfeeding mum.

World Breastfeeding Week is a global celebration of the incredible gift of breastfeeding. It’s a time to recognize the immeasurable benefits for both mother and child, and to advocate for policies and practices that support this natural and essential act.

Breast milk is the perfect food for babies, providing all the nutrients they need for optimal growth and development. It’s packed with antibodies that protect against infections, reduces the risk of chronic diseases, and strengthens the bond between mother and child. For mothers, breastfeeding offers numerous health benefits, including reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer, faster postpartum recovery, and weight loss.

However, despite its undeniable advantages, breastfeeding rates are declining in many parts of the world. Challenges such as lack of support, misinformation, and workplace barriers prevent many women from breastfeeding as long as they would like. That’s why World Breastfeeding Week is so important. It’s a call to action for individuals, healthcare providers, policymakers, and communities to come together and create a breastfeeding-friendly environment.

Let’s celebrate the power of breast milk and empower mothers to make informed choices about feeding their babies. By providing education, support, and resources, we can help ensure that every child has the best start in life. Join us in promoting breastfeeding and building a healthier future for generations to come. #WorldBreastfeedingWeek #BreastfeedBest #NourishOurFuture
